The EFT Externship is an introductory 28-hour training in Emotionally Focused Therapy. The main focus is working with couples although some time will be spent on Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFiT) and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). Taking places over 4 days, this training includes the observation of live and video recorded couple and individual therapy sessions, presentations of theory and clinical techniques, skill training exercises, and discussions of cases, clinical material and issues.

Due to Covid-19, the International Centre for Emotionally Focused Therapy is encouraging trainers across the globe to choose between holding their externships online or in person based on public safety. The Toronto Centre for EFT is excited to announce our June externship.

We're being Creative!

With the desire to continue to grow a vibrant community here in Toronto, ICEEFT trainers Sue Johnson and Robin Williams Blake have come up with this incredible online program for Toronto's 2021 Externship which will be taught by two trainers in two parts.

Part One: Stream Sue Johnson in the privacy of your own home or office!

In June 2019 Toronto four-day Externship was recorded for training purposes. ICEEFT has pulled together 10 hours of Sue Johnson, the lead developer of EFT teaching Day 1 in it's entirety as well as her live session on Day 3. Participants will also see Sue presenting EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy) on Day 4. Sue follows her presentation with a demonstration of using EFIT with an individual. Participants will receive the links to stream this portion of the Externship 4 weeks in advance at an 90 minute online orientation evening. Participants will be able to watch this portion of the training at their own pace on their own time.

This is so exciting! Nobody talks about emotion, attachment and the field of psychotherapy like Sue Johnson. You don’t want to miss this and you can watch at your leisure. - Robin Williams Blake

Part Two: 18 hours over 4 days with ICEEFT Trainer Robin Williams Blake.

In June, Toronto's resident EFT Trainer, Robin Williams Blake will meet the group online to teach the remaining 18-hours via zoom. He will begin by answering any questions you might have about the material covered in the recordings. Robin will then move on to cover the Steps and Stages of EFT as laid out by Sue Johnson as well as the EFT macro and micro interventions. You will also watch a recording of a live session by Sue from the 2017 Toronto Externship with commentary by one of ICEEFT's top trainers, David Fairweather. This commentary will be included in the handouts which will be a great learning aid. There will be a second live session conducted in real-time by Robin to demonstrate the EFT interventions for group discussion.

General Objectives: Externships in EFT

* participants will obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an "Emotionally Focused Therapy" approach.

* participants will be able to view clients in their negative interpersonal attachments and conceptualize relationship distress and repair based on theories of attachment and emotion

* EFT is a relational therapy. The externship will focus on the general model of EFT as laid out in the 2019 book, Attachment Theory and Practice, and present the model as it is implemented in couple and individual therapy sessions.

* Participants will develop skills in sharing, maintaining and engaged, open and collaborative alliance with clients.

* Participants will develop skills in the 5 moves of the basic macro-intervention - the EFT tango - in order to change patterns of affect regulation, models of self and other, strategies for engaging with others and interactional patterns.

* Participants will develop skills in EFT micro interventions taken from experiential and systemic models of intervention.

* Participants will develop skills in overcoming common blocks and impasses in all three therapy modalities and so shaping core corrective emotional experience that lead to constructive dependency and what Rogers termed 'existential living'.

It includes an overview of the entire model including steps and stages, interventions, adult attachment theory, and application of EFT with couples and families. The externship is recommended for all types of mental health clinicians to counsel or want to cancel couples.

This training is the prerequisite for all other EEFT trainings.

Drawing on cutting-edge research on adult attachment--and providing an innovative roadmap for clinical practice--Susan M. Johnson argues that psychotherapy is most effective when it focuses on the healing power of emotional connection. The primary developer of emotionally focused therapy (EFT) for couples, Johnson now extends her attachment-based approach to individuals and families. The volume shows how EFT aligns perfectly with attachment theory as it provides proven techniques for treating anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. Each modality (individual, couple, and family therapy) is covered in paired chapters that respectively introduce key concepts and present an in-depth case example. Special features include instructive end-of-chapter exercises and reflection questions.
